My old man went there in 80' and three guys tried to kill him for being an American. This was in Baalbek. Luckily he managed to probably kill one of them, cripple the other, and incapacitate the last one despite being stabbed in the chest. Wound up running through the Bekaa valley in fear of trouble with the law and going to the Jaffar family hash mill or whatever it was. Long story, but he said it's not a safe place for Westerners to go. Especially if you're Jewish. He said it was the best damn hash he'd ever had in his life, though.
